May 2020 Enhancements

Higher Resolution Images

The Photo Gallery now supports image sizes up to 1920 pixels wide or tall, which will fill the screen of a standard 1080p monitor.

It can also store an archive copy of each photo at even higher resolution.  This can either be at the photo's original resolution, or at 3840 pixels per side (often referred to as "4K").  This allows you to use TroopWebHost as a repository for all of your troop's priceless photos.

To take advantage of these new features, please go to Site Configuration → Site Appearance and scroll to the bottom of the page.

Select the options you want, then click Save.

This will not change the resolution of photos you have previously uploaded to your site, but it will affect any new photos you upload going forward.

Faster Photo Uploads

We upgraded our Multiple Photo Upload page to support rapid upload of high resolution images.  It can now upload full resolution images with no degradation, as fast as your internet connection will allow.

There are three ways to add your images:

You can then press the Start upload button to begin the upload...unless you want to make some last minute corrections using the new Photo Editor!

Photo Editor

You may have noticed that next to each photo on the list (as shown above) there is an Edit button.  This allows you to edit that image before you upload it to the server.

Across the top of the Photo Editor window are four buttons.

The first button lets you crop the photo by grabbing the edges or corners and pulling them in.  You can also rotate or flip the image.

The second button lets you apply a filter to your image.

The third button lets you adjust the brightness, contrast, exposure, and saturation of the colors.

The fourth button allows you to annotate the image with drawings and text.

Click the Done button in the upper right corner to save your changes.

You will still need to click the Start upload button to save the image to the server.

Download Photos

Now that you can store high resolution photos on your site, you can use your site as your troop's primary photo repository.  This may allow you to stop using other services, like Flickr or Google Photos, for that purpose, so that your scouts only have to go to one site to see everything about their scouting experience and those who are contributing photos don't have to upload them to multiple sites.

You can download the highest resolution copy of each image from your server using the new Download Photos page, available on the Photo Gallery menu.

First select the event for which you wish to download photos.

Then click the checkbox in the header row to select all photos, or click in the checkbox next to each photo to select that individual image.

Once you've selected the photos you want, click Download Selected Photos.  This will create a zip file containing the selected photos and download it to your device.

What happens next depends on the browser you are using.  If you are using Chrome on a Windows PC, you may see something like this in the lower left corner of your browser window:

Follow the steps appropriate for your browser and device to save the zip file to your local storage.  You will then need to extract the images from the zip file before using them.

The download function will work with your existing images.  You do not have to enable the archive option to use the download page.  But if you do select the archive option, the download will select the archive copy of that image, if one is available.  This is the only function in TroopWebHost that uses the archived images.

Photo Gallery Slide Show

The Photo Gallery Slide Show has been completely redesigned to take advantage of the higher resolution images.

It begins with a splash page showing the highlights you've written up for that event.

Click the "x" in the upper right corner of that pop-up to begin the slide show.

Click this button in the lower right corner of the page to go to full screen mode.

Click this button in the lower left corner to view thumbnails of all the images for this event.

Click on any of the thumbnails to resume the slide show with that photo.

Click this button to adjust the settings for your slide show.

The settings take effect immediately and will be remembered in this browser/device for the next slide show you open.  Click the "x" in the upper right corner of the settings pop-up to resume the slide show.

Scout Leadership Widget

A new widget is available that can be added as a section to any custom page.

This widget will display the current scout leadership for your troop.

Since it displays the full names of these young people, we strongly recommend that you only add it to a private page, or if you add it to public page you do not make this section available to the public, as shown below.
